Engage students by first helping them to appreciate the advantages to them of improving in the subject area (including discussion of the student's goals), listening to the student, helping them to feel confident to articulate their difficulties without embarrassment, and then keeping dialogue comfortable as tutoring progresses. Building confidence, competence, resilience and independence is always the aim, in my view.
