To be a personal, and educational anchor for a student, helping to relieve stresses that come from classroom and school-life and helping to further progress their learning abilities and educational prowess to new heights. Patience, understanding and an enthusiasm for learning. I understand that some students are not well suited for the classroom…

Throughout my life my parents, tutors and mentors pushed me to get the best marks I could. Despite my marks consistenly being above average, I did not retain the crammed knowledge after exam. It wasn't until I experimented with multiple study techniques that I discovering how to understand knowledge instead of simply repeating the textbooks. I can…

When I was at school, my favourite teachers were always the relatable ones who were genuinely interested in me, my hobbies and my life. This connection is important for many reasons, not only to be a good tutor but to also be a confidant in times of crisis. In the past I have worked with children who had special needs. Being close to the student…

Passing on all that we know in order to put them in a position to succeed. I feel that applies to all walks of life whether its being an english tutor or helping a colleague at work. Patience is also important cause like I said in a previous question, everyone learns at a different pace and it is important to understand that and make adjustments…

I believe tutoring is important for students to identify specific issues that may present themselves. In a classroom environment, a teacher may not have the time to identify such problems where as tutoring can do so, especially for English and Mathematics. I believe I am a very enthusiastic and approachable person so students don't feel…

Explain concepts to students that they do not understand. Fill in the gaps that they have not been able to grasp at school in the classroom. By explaining topics and concepts to the students they obtain confidence and that in turn enhances their ability to progress in the subject they are experiencing difficulty in. Tutoring is the bridge to…

The most important thing for an english tutor to do is to make sure the student can feel confident, making the subject enjoyable to learn, rather than stressful and disheartening. I try to understand what part they are struggling with, so I can help them understand, rather than learn rote answers. So this means I'm patient, and a good…

For me, the most important things an english tutor can do for a student is to set aside the necessary time and effort aside for each session. This is vital when helping the student to maintain their motivation and dedication to their work. Time management and the ability to plan each session; (some students may find it difficult to sort out for…

I consider confidence to be the most important thing I can give to a student as I believe every student has the capability of doing well in any subject, but belief in themselves is needed. Upon starting year 11, I really struggled at chemistry, majorly. But thankfully I had the best tutor that pushed me and gave me the drive & self-belief to…

Inside Sun ValleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 Alexia worked on simplifying algebraic equations and practiced multiplying and dividing algebraic expressions using worksheets ahead of an upcoming test.

For Year 11, Thomas focused on Financial Maths by calculating tax, the Medicare levy, taxable income, and potential tax refunds.

Meanwhile, Year 9 Emily revised surface area calculations for cylinders and applied Pythagoras' Theorem to solve geometry problems in preparation for her assessment.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student repeatedly forgot to bring the correct notes and worksheets for financial maths, which slowed progress when tackling tax calculations—"She couldn't attempt practice questions without her formula sheet," a tutor noted.

In Year 8 algebra, one student revised only familiar problems but avoided multi-step or mixed-topic questions, missing out on learning how to spot sign errors with negatives.

Meanwhile, a primary student hesitated to show working for spelling activities, erasing attempts instead of asking for help when unsure. This made it harder to identify patterns in mistakes during review sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Sun Valley tutor noticed Tariq, a high school student, moving from needing step-by-step help with percentages to accurately calculating them independently by multiplying decimals and fractions by 100—a real leap after early uncertainty.

Isabelle, also in high school, recently tackled tricky perimeter and area problems involving cylinders and trapeziums; she was able to work through new formulas patiently until she got most questions right without prompting.

Meanwhile, Charbel in Year 3 has started reading aloud more confidently and now recognises the structure of sentences—he even pointed out capital letters and full stops on his own during a storybook session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blue Mountains Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Blue Mountains Grammar Preparatory School campus.
