Helping a student to enjoy a subject, or at the very least succeed, is a major thing to help them through school. Everyone has different needs, and a tutor helps accommodate those needs in an efficient way. Inspiration can go a long way, and improving their enjoyment of a subject may set them up for a future they love. When I tutored my friends in…

The most important thing by far is engagement. Tutoring is good, although it can only do so much if the students interest is elsewhere. The best thing a tutor can do is help the student engage more in school as the student will spend 80% of their time in the classroom and 20% with a tutor so using that 80% to your advantage is the most important…

The biggest thing a tutor can do for a student is to be encouraging and respectful, cultivating a safe environment in which they feel that they can pose questions and share answers without fear of judgement. In doing so, it makes the intake of knowledge easier and an overall more enjoyable experience. A tutor must also show a genuine interest in…

Teaching minds, touching hearts, transforming lives. The most important thing to do for students is to listen and know how they learn. Knowing their capabilities is needed in order to challenge them while making sure they are engaged and interested in what is being taught or reviewed. I think a lot of the more important parts of tutoring is involved in the study technique and supporting students to find the motivation in themselves to study and do the work. Being the person that has got their back. Although of course the specific content they are learning is important as well. In addition a lot of students struggle with…

Encouraging students on questions they find difficult and nudging them in the right direction to solve problems so they can do it by themselves without requiring help. Inside Mount HuttonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Daniel focused on working with indices, practising the first, second, and zero power laws through targeted questions.

Year 10 student Tiffany completed a quick maths assessment to identify areas needing support, then reviewed financial maths concepts like wages and salaries using real-life scenarios.

For Year 11 student Max, recent lessons centred on HSC Preliminary revision of calculus, functions, polynomials, and trigonometry by reviewing exam-style problems and addressing misconceptions directly from past tests.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Chemistry, a pattern emerged: reviewing enthalpy and titration calculations revealed that formulas were often memorised but not consistently applied to new scenarios—"needs to be quizzed on what he knows for exams oncoming."

In senior exam preparation, rushed or shallow responses to HSC-style questions meant key marks were lost due to not fully interpreting what was asked.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student in maths struggled with time management during tests; mistakes went unchecked as stress mounted.

During creative writing tasks in Year 5, avoidance of feedback led to repeated issues with structure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mount Hutton noticed a big shift with one Year 10 student who used to skip steps when working through worded maths problems—he now carefully writes down every stage, which has helped him interpret tricky questions much more accurately.

In another high school session, a student made clear progress in financial maths by independently identifying the right variables in multi-step equations without needing hints, something that was a real challenge before.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner who struggled at first with mathematical terminology began using new words correctly and could explain answers out loud by the end of the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Windale Library, bilyabayi—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mount Hutton Public School.
