I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is teach a student how to be conscientious in their work, how to learn effectively and efficiently, and problem solve for themselves. These traits are important life skills that can be gained through education/schooling that they will inevitably have to apply in their maturation into…

Students that seek tutoring often do so because their school classroom does not offer attention to individual needs of the student. As a tutor I feel it is crucial to cater to your students needs so they can excel. This includes; encouraging a growth mindset, developing confidence in tackling challenges, and fostering independence. As a tutor I am…

Studying techniques, creating good habits and of course, feedback for improvements! These are the important aspects that a tutor should show their students. There is much more to learning than parroting back facts - information needs to absorbed, regurgitated, reused in a practical sense. I have much hands-on experience in using my chosen skills -…

In my high school days, i went to alot of tutors and i learned the difference between a good and a bad tutor. Bad tutors i believe stay within the box, afraid to go out and expose the students true potential. A good tutor can not only help the student keep on track of school work and assist in any difficulties the student may have, but also push…

Build a healthy relationship with student and help them build a healthy relationship with learning in general so they don't dread showing up to class/tutor feeling like they don't belong. I believe that the three most important things that a tutor can do for a student, perhaps the only important things which a teacher should do, are to make students curious about what they are learning and appreciate the beauty of what they are learning by developing a way of thinking of their own. I understand and appreciate the beauty and depth…

The most prominent thing is to work according to the level of child. For example, some students love to study through animations and some by real world examples and also some by doing practicals or activities. Hence; its the duty of a tutor to find the way of teaching that interacts a student and make it interesting for a child to explore that…

Most students struggle to gain confidence in solving problems which in turn leads them to be unmotivated to study. In school, they teach students based on a certain method that suits a cohort or class of students, which caused some students to lag behind. I find that as a tutor, we need to identify which part is lagging behind, then tackle it together with the student. I am friendly so I could easily build a rapport with my students. I come in understanding…

Inside KealbaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ben worked on long multiplication and practised finding the perimeter and area of rectangles, using real-world examples for context.

In Year 10, Aidan focused on comparative essay writing by analysing exemplar responses and drafting a strong introduction, while also revisiting his own previous work.

For VCE Psychology, Year 12 student Jodie reviewed principles of sensation and perception—including Gestalt principles—and summarised binocular and monocular depth cues with visual aids to deepen understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 Psychology student often hesitated to use subject-specific terminology in short-answer responses; as one tutor noted, "she needs more psychological language to maximise marks." This meant even strong ideas lost impact in assessments.

In Year 9 English, a focus on wordiness and run-on sentences led to overly long answers that missed key points—"he sometimes repeats the same word in the same sentence," a tutor observed during essay work.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner struggled with spelling and left several longer words unfinished when writing stories, making it hard for them to communicate ideas clearly and independently.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Kealba recently noticed a Year 11 student who'd struggled to make her arguments clear is now writing concise topic sentences and developing insightful points on her own.

Another high schooler, previously hesitant with comparative essays, has started using evidence more confidently to support his ideas when analysing two texts side by side.

In a younger session, one Year 4 student—who used to avoid reading aloud—read an entire page without prompting and even paused to sound out tricky words independently. The lesson finished with him asking for a harder paragraph next time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Albans Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Paul's Kealba Catholic School.
