The most important things a chemistry tutor can do are build confidence, make learning feel manageable, and create a safe space where students are not afraid to make mistakes. A tutor should guide students to understand why something works, not just memorise it, and support them in developing strong study habits and independence. My strengths are…

Tutors are important elements for student success in active learning and problem solving environments . Periodic evaluation of tutors professional behaviour helps to determine the faculty development. Tutors need to achieve skills and attitudes for supporting the 'learning process and metacognitive knowledge' and 'assessing and giving feedback'.…

The most important thing I can do for a student is build their confidence in their learning. By the time I have finished a term (or 2) with my student's, they are more confident, more intuitive and approach their work with excitement. Additionally, I will provide the necessary tools for a student to carry on to their further studies. If you're a…

In my high school days, i went to alot of tutors and i learned the difference between a good and a bad tutor. Bad tutors i believe stay within the box, afraid to go out and expose the students true potential. A good tutor can not only help the student keep on track of school work and assist in any difficulties the student may have, but also push…

Studying techniques, creating good habits and of course, feedback for improvements! These are the important aspects that a chemistry tutor should show their students. To be flexible. Every one of us is a one-of-a-kind human being. This fact is so important that as a chemistry tutor, being flexible in the teaching approach will help the students grow in their own way without being forced to follow others' approaches. Empathy and communication skills. Having been working since I was 16, my mindset has changed…

The most important thing that a chemistry tutor could do for a student would be to gage what level they are at, and give them questions according to that, because if someone was aiming to get above 50% on a test for example, it would be important to spend more time on the basics, than the questions that only 5-10% of the cohort could answer. My…

Be encouraging and readily available. Tutoring is all about allowing students to reach their inner potential by giving them the extra push & extra support. This means that tutors need to be encouraging towards their students to instill that confidence in them. Boosting morale pays dividends and means that students are more likely to achieve their…

There are a lot of things that can be considered important while tutoring a student. I believe the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is to ensure that they understand what they are learning instead of providing them with the answer. It is often the case when explaining something to a student and they say they understand, however it is clear they do not. Being persistent and patient with students is far…

One of the most important things a teacher can do for their student is to listen. Not to listen to think of the next response but to listen to understand. I believe as a teacher listening specifically to WHAT the student is asking not HOW they are asking it is one of the most valuable and important skills I've learned to develop. When a student is…

Inside HillsideTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Stefan focused on ordering decimals from largest to smallest and explored decimal place value using hands-on number line activities.

In Year 9, Alice tackled Pythagoras' theorem in right-angled triangles and practiced simplifying algebraic expressions involving indices, reinforcing concepts with worked examples.

For Year 12, Chatwell discussed plans for her final year and received support on General Mathematics content, including a few targeted questions and guidance on upcoming Business Management materials.

Recent Challenges

Several secondary students showed difficulty organizing their written work in mathematics, particularly with algebra and calculus.

For example, one Year 11 student omitted intermediate steps when simplifying fractions, leading to arithmetic errors—"as a tutor noted, he didn't separate the numerator's terms before dividing by h."

In VCE exam practice, another student's performance dropped under time pressure; missing final answers or not boxing them made solutions unclear to assessors.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student frequently confused (x,y) for (y,x) in coordinate geometry tasks, causing repeated mix-ups during reflections. These habits resulted in avoidable mistakes and extra time spent clarifying working.

Recent Achievements

One Hillside tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to hesitate asking for help now clearly identifies when she's stuck and actively seeks guidance, especially with paragraph structure in English.

In Year 12 maths, another student began tackling calculus problems independently—last week, he solved a tricky differentiation question on his own after only needing a reminder about the product rule.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has started correcting her own mistakes during multiplication exercises without prompting, showing much more persistence than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sydenham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sydenham - Hillside Primary School-Hillside Campus.
