Some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is ensuring that the student knows the content that has been taught. Also make sure that you are listening to the student and try to minimise their weaknesses and maximise their strengths. As a tutor, my strengths are being confident and only speaking what I know of. I will only teach…

A tutor should focus more on the foundation of the student and focus more on the basics of the subject. Also, corelating the subject with real-life examples could make learning easier and more interesting. I believe I have the right amount of patience required to tutor students. Also, I am open to interactive methods of tutoring and try to be…

Increasing a student's grade or helping them understand a single concept are just some of the things that most people look for in a tutor. While these are undoubtedly worthwhile indicators of a tutor's ability to teach a student, they are often mercurial and temporary once the tutoring stops. I firmly believe that what differentiates a good tutor…

A tutor should understand a student's struggle and achievements, and be able to bring out the fun in studying to help them in their academic struggles. I encourage and motivate students to excel and set a foundation for future studies, as well as providing an entertaining and educational environment suitable for each student. As a current student…

The relationship between me and the student is very essential. It is utmost important that I ensure that both the student and the parent is happy with the way I teach and how they see me, therefore my first impression is extremely. I would also need to keep an eye on how the student is progressing by comparing the grade when he/she first began…

As a former student, I believe that a student learns best when they feel comfortable any question and not judged. As a tutor, I will ensure that the student is in a safe environment and would listen to any concerns they may have. It is important that the student leaves class with their questions answered and any concepts they found difficult,…

A tutor should be patient and supportive. Every child sets his/her own pace of doing things and sometimes they might not get it right, so it is important to be understanding. I am very patient, it doesn't matter how long it takes for a child to understand a topic, because it is quite normal. I would not mind repeating it over and over. I am also…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to clear the concepts. If a student knows the concept well then he/she can apply it to any problem pertaining to a particular topic. A tutor can do this by giving real world examples and discussing about the topic in general. Math is one of the most fun subjects to learn if one understands…

To me, a great tutor stands for patience, responsibility and giving the students full support where they needed. I define a patient tutor as whom give students the time and courage to think about solving problems without pressure. If I am a tutor, I am able to keep my responsibility as a tutor to find what the student really need during their…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to guide them instead of doing the work for them. It is important for the students to feel that they have control over what they are learning and for them to be encouraged through feedback and practice. I think the most important thing is that the tutor and the student have a relationship in which the student is able to express their concerns and needs. This allows the tutor to individualise the study experience, to most benefit the client! I am positive and motivating. I know tutoring can be confronting and stressful at times and I would like to…

For any student, progress will naturally vary and giving them that support and encouragement to persevere and overcome hurdles in their learning is,…

The main thing is being able to effectively explain a topic or clear students' doubts. If the student is able to explain the topic to others, I believe that is a good indication of their understanding and shows that a tutor has successfully explained a topic or cleared doubts. My main strengths are that I am patient and eager to learn myself. If I…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is always listen to them and know what best works for them. This can mean to always pay attention to a student and understand how they learn effectively. This may mean having to make changes and adaptations to your tutoring style which is fine as long as the student gets the…

Inside HeathmontTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Mia focused on mastering multiplication facts with a times tables grid and worked through several practice questions on long division, including problems with decimals.

Year 7 student Jack revised percentages by calculating discounts and converting between fractions and percentages, then practiced financial maths skills such as finding profit and understanding rates of pay.

For Year 8, Ella concentrated on algebraic techniques for solving linear equations and revisited BIDMAS (order of operations) using step-by-step examples to prepare for an upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student often avoided writing full working, especially when solving for x—this led to confusion with negative signs and extra time spent fixing errors rather than progressing ("needs to improve writing down working out").

In Year 11 English, notes showed that missed classes weren't always followed up; "definitely write those notes up for the missed class on quadrilaterals so we can follow up and make up the missed work."

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner hesitated to show division steps out of concern for mistakes. As a result, accuracy wavered during multi-step problems and confidence dipped mid-task.

Recent Achievements

One Heathmont tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who had always hesitated to ask for help; during recent sessions, she started checking her logic out loud and clarifying steps, instead of quietly guessing.

In Year 8 maths, another student finally broke through on algebra: after weeks of confusion with expanding and simplifying expressions, he solved several equations independently and even explained his process back.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who used to rush worded problems began underlining key information before working—leading her to solve all division questions correctly without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Realm Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Great Ryrie Primary School.
