The most important thing a tutor can do is to empower a student in their capabilities. To remind them that they are extremely smart and capable. This encourages them to try their best. I am a very bubbly and kind individual that gets to know each of my students individually. In other words, I find their specific learning methods and resources that…

I think that a tutor who can model different ways to solve a problem is important, as well as being patient and ready for students with different levels of understanding. Furthermore, I believe that one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is have the ability to be a reliable source when a student is having a difficult time at…

Not only improve their baseline ability in a given subject, but improve their confidence in themselves that they are capable to do what is required. A tutor should establish a connection with their student in the sense they should make the effort to truly understand their student for their strengths and weaknesses. Similarly, a tutor should uphold patience with every student. That way, a student learning in a encouraging environment allows them to develop on their knowledge and skills more…

PDHPE Tutor Hampton Park, VIC
I believe the most important role of a tutor is to create a judgement-free environment where a student feels confident asking for help. Rather than simply reteaching content they're already learning at school, I concentrate on identifying and targeting weaknesses to support long-term improvement. As a recent graduate, I'm able to build strong…

PDHPE Tutor Clyde North, VIC
The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to have patience, be willing to take feedback as a tutor, and put the most effort in helping a child get most out of their learning. Often when working with kids of a young age, they can get frustrated quickly if they don't understand something, so it is important to be able to quickly calm…

I believe the most important aspects is improving their confidence and self-esteem within the subject they struggle with. By providing examples and time it is highest priority to allow them to enjoy the subject by improving their grades. I am very knowledgeable as I did English and English Literature during my VCE. I am also very patient with a…

Inside HarkawayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Zarleah practised multiplication and division, focusing on worded problems to strengthen her understanding of number operations.

In Year 8, Neva worked on writing lab reports for chemical changes and revised the properties of elements in preparation for a science test, using recent class experiments as examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Dom tackled genetics topics such as Punnett squares—including dihybrid crosses—and reviewed key terms like alleles and chromosomes for an upcoming biology assessment.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student struggled to keep her notes organized during Biology, making it harder to refer back when preparing for tests; as a tutor observed, "I would continue to encourage Dom to keep organised notes—especially moving into Year 12."

In Chemistry, another senior student was caught off guard by not knowing the next topic in advance, which led to time spent guessing rather than consolidating knowledge.

Meanwhile, a primary student working on large numbers sometimes wrote "102" instead of "120," showing how confusion with number formation slowed her progress and added frustration mid-task.

Recent Achievements

One Harkaway tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate when stuck on statistics problems now confidently asks for clarification as soon as something feels unclear, leading to much smoother sessions.

In another case, a high schooler working on lab reports moved from not knowing the structure at all to independently drafting several sections correctly without prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger student who previously mixed up times tables has started using factors when solving tricky fraction problems—a strategy she avoided before—and just completed a set of worded division questions entirely on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bunjil Place Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Harkaway Primary School.
