Most important things I would say would be to be encouraging and prepared. As I said students can feel discouraged sometimes, so I think being positive and patient so that they can have an open mind and have some resilience when content is hard is crucial. As a tutor I think one of my biggest strengths is that I am a student as well and have…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instil a level of confidence. Confidence that comes the succesful understanding of mathematic concepts not only makes current studying more rewarding but aids in future development. Particularly in mathematics were new concepts are constantly introduced, such confidence allows a student…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is understand their student, as considering their ability, learning style, and pace. As these small gesture can not only improve the student teacher relationship but have a positive impact/growth on the students learning. I believe some (top 3) of my strengths consist of communication, teamwork, and…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence and independence in learning. It’s not just about giving answers, but helping students understand how to approach problems, think critically, and develop strategies they can use on their own. A good tutor creates a safe space where students feel…

Local Reviews

Since Diali has started working with Brendan I have seen her motivation to engage in maths skyrocket. Prior, it took a great deal of coaxing to get her to do her homework, let alone to do anything extra relating to maths. Brendan has provided Diali with cause for a notable increase in her enthusiasm, sense of being encouraged, confidence and her incentive to work on her maths. She completes Brendan's assigned homework with enthusiasm (except when she is too tired at the end of the day) and she is practicing her times-tables with less resistance! She is looking forward to her next maths tutorial with Brendan. Brendan has a gentle, helpful and very supportive approach and he relates superwell to children. We are really so happy to have the support of Brendan as Diali's tutor.

Inside ChuwarTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Henry practised long division and tackled subtraction word problems, focusing on breaking down multi-step calculations.

Year 10 student Cale reviewed index laws and positive exponents in Maths, then worked on essay structure and in-text citations for English using sample drafts.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ben revised permutation concepts for an upcoming exam and strengthened his understanding of trigonometric identities including cosine and sine rules with targeted practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student lost a major Maths assignment due to not backing up files, which directly impacted his grade; "we will need to change the way he has been saving his documents," noted one tutor.

In Year 9 English, ideas were often left in his head and struggled to become clear paragraphs—he needed repeated support just to start writing.

Several sessions with a senior Maths student showed persistent mix-ups between mean and mode, and missed units of measurement when questions were worded differently.

In Year 4, attempts to do calculations mentally led to frequent sign errors and confusion between addition and subtraction, especially as focus faded near lesson's end.

Recent Achievements

One Chuwar tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking for help—he's now coming forward when behind and even explains tricky concepts like mean, median, and mode out loud without prompting.

In Year 12, another student showed real initiative by starting research before lessons on an English assessment and making thoughtful edits to her draft independently.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who usually struggled to stay on topic in writing finally wrote an English paragraph that was clear and concise from start—something she'd never managed before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ipswich Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Tivoli State School.
