Empathy, patience, and a presence that makes the student comfortable in asking questions and in the fact that they don't know something. That is the first step in learning. I'm patient and understanding for students that struggle as I have struggled myself to achieve what I have achieved. I hope this helps me be a tutor that can grasp what the…

I think establishing a positive and supportive relationship with the student is paramount because only when they feel supported, they will feel comfortable to ask questions and engage more. Some students may learn better through visual aids, while others may prefer hands-on activities. Therefore, as a teacher it is crucial to know how to adapt the…

It is to provide a healthy learning environment. There should be a good rapport between the student and the teacher. The teacher should make the student feel that they are valued and appreciated. It is the primary goal of the tutor to make the student feel that they are well guided and that they are learning the lessons. I am flexible. In dealing…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to clarify concepts, build confidence, and provide structure. It's not just about giving answers but guiding the student to understand the reasoning behind them. A good tutor helps students develop effective study habits, encourages them to think independently, and supports them…

For me, the most important things a tutor can do for a student are: 1. Able to identify the weak spots of a student in a unit/subject, because not only does it help build a stronger base for future learning, but also maximises the learning experience of the student. 2. Provide constructive feedback for a student, so he/she can continue…

To keep up with a student's progress and help them strive in their subject. A tutor should help a student build genuine understanding, not just memorise steps. That means breaking concepts down clearly, guiding them through the logic behind each idea, and checking that they truly grasp the foundations before moving forward. A tutor should also provide steady support and structure, encouraging good study habits and showing…

A tutor should make their students feel that they are in a supportive, safe space, and that there are no stupid questions. They should be able to demonstrate how to solve problems by example, gradually building up the student's confidence to do these problems on their own. I think a tutor, in a way, needs to be like a parent. Instead of being too harsh on one end of the spectrum or being too 'nice' on the other end, it is important for tutors to be able to temper a balance of both. They should be firm, but still show care for the student. Care is extremely important - if the student does not feel that the tutor…

Inside CheltenhamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 Jack reviewed Ohm's Law and the differences between series and parallel electric circuits, also addressing questions from his school work.

For Year 11 Mia, lessons focused on algebraic factorisation of linear expressions and coordinate geometry—calculating midpoints, gradients, and distances between two points.

Meanwhile, Year 11 Olivia worked through exam revision covering quadratic equations, probability problems, graphing equations, and aspects of financial mathematics.

Recent Challenges

A Year 3 student found aligning number places in decimal calculations confusing, particularly when working on clock questions—her written layout sometimes made it hard to check work for errors.

In Year 8, one student often relied heavily on notes and formula sheets during revision; he wasn't able to do some of the revision questions without looking at his notes, which slowed progress with algebra and indices.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student had incomplete homework in statistics, meaning less time could be spent practicing exam-style problems. Gaps from missing or late schoolwork lingered into revision sessions, especially before assessments.

Recent Achievements

One Cheltenham tutor noted a big shift in a Year 10 student who, after previously hesitating to ask for help, now openly voices questions whenever she's confused—especially during challenging proofs.

In Year 12 maths, Levi struggled with expanding and factorising equations at first, but recently completed all set problems independently and accurately.

Meanwhile, a younger student in primary years, who found division daunting before, has started grouping objects into sets using diagrams and then confidently writing out the matching equation without prompting—something she would have avoided just weeks ago.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Epping Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Epping Heights Public School.
