I believe that tutors must be good analyzers if they want to succeed. I mean that they have to examine the way students study and practice and even think. After a good observation, they can provide students with the tools with which students can improve their weaknesses. This can be different form one student to another one. Besides, Encouraging…

-Investigate a student's weakness and focus on overcoming that weakness. -A tutor should have an individual plan for each student depending on a student's specific need. -A tutor should aim to develop the skills of a student with time. Results in a scorecard should serve as a KPI. Persistence is one of my favorite traits when it comes to…

Listening to the student is very important. You need to know when they are getting frustrated and exactly what is confusing them. Sometimes they figure out a different method for solving a problem and if you don't fully understand what they are saying you may not realise they are on the correct track. I think I am good at breaking complicated…

I believe a tutor should closely monitor the student to ensure the latter is performing as he/she should at a pre-determined academic level. Be friendly to the student, no student like learning under pressure or fear. Believing in the student and constantly encouraging him/her about their potential to build a bright career, and also make them…

The most important part of being a tutor is to provide support. I gain trust with my students by showing them that I am there to support them fully. I engage with them one on one and ensure that there is truly no question 'too stupid' that they cannot ask me for help with. I find over time how the student personally learns and work with their own…

Hence, one of the most important things that a tutor can do is understand the student's needs and to meet those needs in a…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is focus on that student, listen to what they want and then create a personalised lesson just for them. The major difference between a class and a tutor is how the tutor is able to focus on the one student, and maximising this chance and truly listening to the student and helping them…

I've found in my experience that students often lack self confidence, they are extremely capable but feel as though they can't take the problem. As I said in the previous questions, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is instilling the importance of Math and Science to everyday lives. I loved our Scott! He was perfect for our year 5!
Lindsey, Alfred Cove

Inside Alfred CoveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Olivia reviewed perimeter, area, and surface area from her recent measurement test, then practised Venn diagrams and two-way tables to prepare for a probability assessment.

Year 9 student Paige focused on multiplying and dividing decimals and worked through estimation strategies using real numbers, identifying areas for improvement with targeted examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Michael tackled ratios, rates, and percentages—solving financial mathematics problems involving simple interest and applying ratio reasoning in context.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, he relied heavily on a calculator for fraction questions, leading to missed practice with manual calculations and more errors when calculators weren't allowed.

A Year 11 student in algebra avoided writing out working steps—as noted, blank lines hid sign mistakes in equations—making it difficult to spot patterns or correct errors later.

In English (Year 5), incomplete homework meant less progress building vocabulary and academic writing skills.

One Year 9 student's lesson notes showed notetaking was patchy, resulting in confusion during topic reviews.

Each of these habits slowed confidence and left gaps before assessments.

Recent Achievements

One Alfred Cove tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated with significant figures now tackling worded scientific notation problems independently, even rounding correctly to two and three significant figures.

In a recent high school maths session, another student who once struggled with choosing the right formula for simple interest was able to identify which calculation method fit each question type and explain her reasoning aloud.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner—who used to stay quiet during lessons—has begun verbalising his thinking while working through multi-digit subtraction, allowing the tutor to address misunderstandings on the spot.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as AH Bracks Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Melville Primary School.
