The most important things a chemistry tutor can do for a student is act as a motivation for them to achieve their personal best. Although raising marks is the main objective for tutors, they must be able to interact with the students and find their weak points and there is a limit to what they can teach. They must act as a pillar that can support…

A tutor has the opportunity to shape a students' mind, in more ways than one. Therefore, the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is to make the best use of this opportunity and let the student discover the best version of themselves. I believe I am very patient, which is an important quality for any tutor. I do not mind even if I have to…

A tutor can clearly identify the strengths and weaknesses of students and guide them accordingly. He should focus on the strengths and minimise their weaknesses. This is very important as it gives a clear direction to the students. This can also help them realise what career path would be good for them. A tutor should also be able to help students…

For me, the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is help the student feel more confident — not just with the subject, but in themselves. I think we sometimes forget how big of a difference it makes when someone believes they can actually do it. I really try to celebrate the small wins — whether they’ve just understood a tough…

They must be able to relate to the student's situation and current understanding of topics/content. This is the only way tutors can identify what student's need to work and create methods for them to see real improvement. I am attentive and understanding of each student's personal situation and needs, thereby helping me teach them at the correct…

I think there are a lot of qualities that go into being a good tutor. Some of the most essential ingredients are to be compassionate and build rapport . A good tutor should take the time to connect meaningfully with the student and their families. They will be caring and compassionate, but also professional. Having a good rapport with the student…

I believe a chemistry tutor can make all the difference to a student struggling with their studies. School teaching can often be mechanical and impersonal; an environment where some students find it difficult to learn. I know first hand that teaching in smaller groups or one-on-one works is much more effective at learning hard to grasp concepts.…

Mina has been fantastic, raising my daughter's (yr 8) maths test marks by 20% in the first test after just 3 tutoring sessions....My daughter also feels so much more confident in class, and not so terrified to be asked to answer any questions as she was before.
Coral, Alexandria

Inside AlexandriaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Daniel focused on probability using tree diagrams and completed practice questions on chance, while Year 8 student Mia reviewed angles and worked through problems involving rates and speed.

For Year 11, Lucas tackled a pre-assessment covering algebra basics, taxes and depreciation, as well as graphing techniques and trigonometry concepts like similar triangles and the law of cosines.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 mathematics, a student often felt overwhelmed by lengthy word problems, saying "I don't know what to do when there's so much info." This led to skipped steps and confusion about which numbers were needed.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student preparing for the HSC left several algebra questions blank on a practice test, not attempting them even though similar types are likely to appear in exams.

In senior maths (Year 12), another student missed easy marks in trigonometry because she didn't read questions thoroughly at first—only correcting errors after they were pointed out mid-session.

Recent Achievements

One Alexandria tutor noted that a Year 10 student, who used to avoid asking questions when stuck, now openly identifies tricky algebra steps and requests clarification before moving on—showing real initiative compared to her earlier hesitancy.

In a recent high school session, another student completed the last set of opportunity test questions and managed to solve half independently for the first time, rather than relying entirely on prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who previously struggled with long division was able to finish all her practice questions without needing any help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Green Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Central Sydney Intensive English High School.
