What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁

I really enjoy the "aha" moment when students understand a concept. It makes me happy when they gain more interest in subjects because they understand the basics and can build on that. I think it's unfortunate when students don't realise how interesting a subject can be just because they don't understand the "language" of the subject. Once they learn that, it's easy to build concepts on that base.

My Strengths as Tutor πŸ’ͺ

I'm good at picking out where a student's understanding is inadequate. When a student comes to me for help regarding a concept, I begin by asking questions from the very basics ("Can you tell me what a cell is") and going more and more advanced until I find where they can't answer me. I then begin teaching from that level. I think it's important to let them know that they're not being judged, and teaching them according to their strengths and weaknesses rather than on the basis of what they are expected to know at that level.

Most important things I can do for a student πŸ…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is truly be their well-wisher. I think students are coming to tutors because they know they need help. Acknowledging that they took that step, understanding the knowledge base with which they're there, teaching them in easy terms, and creating a long term plan for their studies is the method I adopt to do this. If they're a student I see often, then constantly checking in and seeing how the plan is working with their schedule and making modifications along the way is another useful method.
