What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁

I enjoy watching students gain mastery in area that was previously causing them a lot of frustration and anxiety. Many times I see students who have a negative view on say mathematics. I always inform them that very soon maths will be one of their favourite subjects. I am able to do this by showing them strategies which will reduce their cognitive load. I also use a variety of games to reinforce the various concepts. They key is for students to achieve success. Once a student experience success, they become more motivated and have more confidence in that particular subject.

My Strengths as Tutor 💪

I have had over 20 years teaching students in a variety of international schools. I have also done many training sessions with teachers on mathematics fact fluency and bar modelling. I use a lot modelling with faded examples and always use concrete and practical examples whenever possible.

Most important things I can do for a student 🏅

The first thing that a tutor needs to do is identify what the underlying problem is. It may be that the student has very weak number facts, has a negative attitude to the subject or requires a lot of visuals to grasp a particular concept. Once the tutor has identified the particular problems, they then need to tailor a specific individual program for that student. The tutor also needs to make the learning accessible to the student by breaking it down into smaller chunks. Too often teachers are asking their students to process multiple pieces of information at the same time.
