The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to develop their skills to a high level or a level higher than what is was prior to tutoring - essentially to boost their competence and confidence for the subject area they are being tutored for. Another objective includes motivating the student to enjoy maths (or any other subject) beyond the classroom.
