What do I enjoy most about tutoring? π
I absolutely love breaking down concepts or giving simple strategies for tackling harder problems and watching my students develop confidence as they realise they do have the ability to succeed. It's exciting to see them finally master a topic they have previously struggled with and a privilege to reflect with them on this personal growth.
My Strengths as Tutor πͺ
Having recently completed Year 12, I've learnt the value of prioritisation and I use this to maximise the utility of our sessions. I always ensure syllabus objectives are met, keeping myself up-to-date by reading about curriculum changes. Through an online course, I became aware that many students' goals are "performance avoidance", driven by a fear of failure, which is why pointing out syllabus links and relevance of content is so important for motivation. In the long-term, however, I hope the positive environment I maintain will help students become motivated by mastery goals instead.
Most important things I can do for a student π
The goal of tutoring should be to empower students and thus the primary focus of tuition should be to develop confidence and independence rather than reliance. For this reason, I believe the most important component of tutoring is not working through content, but reflecting and future planning to ensure the student believes they have the skills and resources to achieve their goals. It is also vital that students can develop positive connotations with learning, which a tutor can create through encouragement, acknowledging strengths and rephrasing difficulties as exciting challenges to overcome.
