What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
I enjoy being able to guide individuals through their academic journey, helping them to become more self-assured of their skills. I find it quite rewarding when students encounter a lightbulb moment or an "oh!" moment, after having a difficult concept explained to them the first time.
I can relate to the experiences of these children as I myself had various tutors over this arduous journey. These tutors helped me to change my mindset around studying and equip me with essential knowledge on the course, which ultimately allowed me to focus on my goals.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
I am very attentive and pay close attention to detail, so I am able to tailor each lesson to the student's needs in order to help them maximise their performance. I am also able to explain concepts clearly and attempt to make lessons as engaging as possible.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
I believe that one important thing would be acknowledging the unique strengths and weaknesses of the student. Thus, catering the lessons to address these weaknesses will allow the student to feel more confident while answering the questions they were struggling with.
Secondly, I believe that having a solid understanding of key concepts is necessary in order to excel in both English and Mathematics. For example, a close analysis of textual features and fully understanding the various themes present in a novel can really benefit the creation of an insightful and cohesive essay.

Heidi was able to apply the formulas for calculating the perimeter of many shapes by using the notes that she has written in her school notebook. It was great seeing her neat, organised, colour-coded notes!
We need to build her confidence in identifying which different shapes are used to make a composite shape, and which formulas need to added together to find their perimeter. We also need to revise calculating the perimeter of a sector.

The content being covered in tutoring sessions is a week ahead as compared to what Heidi is learning in her math class. I believe Heidi is benefitting from this structure as she is able to learn the concepts in the tutoring sessions, and then use her math class time to consolidate her understanding. Thus, she is becoming more confident in answering questions. Since she didn't complete her homework for last week, we used the sheet as a warm up activity and she had completed it in only 5 minutes. I also introduced questions involving multiple index laws, which were adequately attempted.
It would be great if Heidi could attempt her homework questions within a few days of her last tutoring lesson to make sure she doesn't forget what she had learnt. Furthermore, it would give me a better chance to fill in the gaps in her understanding. Multiplication with two-digit numbers also needs improvement, so I will bring some multiplication tables next time.

Heidi was able to pick up the pattern of applying the laws onto different equations rather quickly, which was pleasing. She is also remembering to write all her working out on the page before her final answer.
As we only covered the very basic concepts of indices this lesson, more practice could be made in the future on questions that involve multiple terms and values, and ensuring that the working out is clear to ensure limited mistakes. Furthermore, Heidi needs to practice her division and fraction simplification to ensure that she is able to solve problems faster and make less mistakes as well. After learning all the index laws, we will attempt questions that incorporate multiple laws.

Heidi is now more confident in answering questions relating to financial math, as she is able to identify when to use different formulas at a faster speed. She also feels confident in calculating the amount of interest an individual receives on a yearly basis. She is also comfortable calculating the final value of a figure after a percentage increase or decrease.
More practice could be done on calculating the initial value of a manipulated number, and also breaking down complex worded questions quicker. However, we worked on putting key steps and formulas relating to such concepts on her cheat sheet.
