What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
I bring strong experience in and passion to tutoring in mathematics. Through my schooling I was recognized as being gifted in mathematics and was awarded honours and excellence awards in mathematics in my senior years. I am currently continuing my studies in the area as an engineering student at RMIT University. Through tutoring, I enjoy sharing my passion for mathematics with others and helping people to improve, building their mathematical ability and their confidence. In a reference a parent stated I changed her daughter’s view of mathematics from a chore to something she enjoys and is good at. This is what I enjoy most about tutoring.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
There are two main strengths I bring to tutoring that help ensure successful sessions. Firstly, I make sure I build a positive and professional mentoring relationship with students. I am a very friendly and approachable person. This is important because students need to feel comfortable to be able to ask genuine questions and seek help. It also allows me to build their confidence and to learn the student’s specific point of need and tailor sessions to their specific needs. Secondly, I have a clear process for sessions that I generally use.
• I briefly check on their progress from the last session and refresh their understandings.
• I teach the theory relevant to the student’s current work, using different ways to help develop deeper understandings.
• I get students to go through a question in front of me, explaining their thinking at each step so I can accurately assess their progress and identify any problems or misconceptions. This means I can clearly address their learning needs, identify where they are struggling and provide extra attention where needed.
• I use the student’s current coursework so that they can ask relevant questions and address current problems.
• I check their understanding and comfort with the session’s work.
These two strengths – constructive working relationship and effective process – help me, as stated in a reference, transform students’ understanding and knowledge of mathematics.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
It is one thing to help someone get the correct answer, but it is another thing to change student’s outlook. A positive and confident outlook will increase engagement, which means that the student is more likely to start having success even when the tutor is not present. This is my most important task as a tutor, because it builds independence rather than dependence, which builds confidence. To do this I:
• Learn where the student is at and identify those areas where they are struggling or have misconceptions;
• Teach them the processes and tricks so that they can be successful;
• Be easy to understand; and
• Support them in developing deeper and richer understandings, as well as the links between areas they have mastered and those they have not yet.
Ultimately, their success is my success, and building this success is the most important thing I can do for a student.
