What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
There are various things I love about tutoring! Teaching has always been my passion and I believe that tutoring has always been the stepping stone into a future career as a teacher. Nonetheless, I find delight in helping others reach the 'lightbulb moment', when they finally grasp a concept. For me, this feeling is unmatched and to see a similar reaction from others is definitely a key motive in tutoring.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
I believe that my knowledge of the subjects I teach is my greatest strength. For maths, I frequently receive 100% on my school maths tests (both Specialist Maths and Mathematical Methods) as well as having received High Distinctions (top 3%) for both the Australian Maths Olympiad and Australian Maths Games that do not directly test theory but also problem solving techniques. Needless to say I could tutor a student on how to tackle non-routine application problems that goes beyond the mathematical formulae.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
In fact, I grew up having a few tutors but found that they all lacked one thing - constant support. I feel a tutor should always make themselves available to assist their students outside of class hours. I also feel that tutors should never appear intimidating to their students. I am the lead altar server at my church, and all current younger altar servers have familiarised themselves with the procedures under my tutelage. I was always extremely patient to the children, ensuring that I gained their trust which inevitably strengthens their receptiveness to my instructions.

About Christian
My strength as a VCE English tutor
I completed 2024 with a school coursework average of 99% and an overall study score of 48. Throughout the years, I constantly developed my writing style and now believe that I could teach any student 'efficient writing'. That is, removing writing habits that lack clarity and are more focused on being unnecessarily verbose rather than conveying ideas. A common area overlooked in VCE English is the depth of analysis, with more students just identifying literary devices at face value. As an English tutor, I would encourage the student to go more into depth with the author's rationale behind choosing the specific piece of metalanguage and how to successfully unpack the author's intended impact on the audience.
My strength as an English tutor for younger year levels
When I was in year 1, my dad was an expert at teaching my sister and I how to read. I still recall the various techniques he taught us, whether it be phonetically sounding out a word or to recognise common patterns in word pronunciation. As a former leader of both my primary and secondary school, I was frequently called upon to assist the younger year levels with their English, where I fully understood the common difficulties that younger children face when reading or writing with limited vocabulary. I have amazing techniques which I am sure can take a younger student well beyond their expected level of English.

Memorising skills. This might be controversial but memorising is a super important part of VCE English and Courtney will have to memorise a lot more passages of text verbatim moving forward. Conjuring up words on the spot while reaching for the higher marks is unideal.

Not anything in particular, I did quite a lot of the talking in this lesson.

Courtney is quite smart in being able to find deeper connotations of words in argument analysis. She thought of some unique perspectives which even I did not think of. She has the potential to reach the higher ranks of argument analysis which only a small minority of the state can achieve.
Reading the passage. In a real exam, she would have less time to read the passage.
She is slowly getting the hang of finding unique insights herself as well as looking for the vested interests of the authors.

I tell her it is hard to make an assumption too far in analysing argument provided that she has evidence and quotes to back up what she is saying. However, she sometimes goes a step too far and doesn't support it with a quote which undermines her argument.
