What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
My love of tutoring stems from my love of the subject matter itself. I love maths and its ability to be both logical and allow for endless creativity. The key to the movement of objects millions of times larger than Earth sits in my backpack, which I think is the closest thing to magic we can ever experience. I love helping kids understand and appreciate this. I am also a firm believer that confidence in mathematics does wonders for self-esteem, particularly for young girls, something that I think is integral to their development as they find themselves and develop relationships.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
I believe that my strengths as a tutor stem from my strengths as a self-sufficient learner, and my ability to pass these skills onto others. My ability to think laterally allows me to clearly explain problems in conceptual ways that will assist students in their understanding. My primary aim as a tutor will be to improve the confidence of students in Mathematics, which I believe to be the most essential aspect of academic success; as such, my ability to develop trusting, respectful mentorships with students will prove integral to their successes.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
I think that whilst the short-term benefits of academic success that a tutor can provide are immensely important, the true role of a tutor should be to introduce an effective, sustainable method of learning suited to the individual that can be used in their future academic pursuits. I think the best way to achieve this is to establish a collaborative and trusting relationship with the student, built on a genuine desire for improvement. In this way, a tutor can act both as a force for learning and improvement and as a trusted friend who will listen to concerns regarding shortcomings.

Student displayed understanding of concepts and the ability to self-label different parts of algebraic expressions with limited help. Student was able to complete simple algebraic equations independently following direct instruction. Discussion of like terms brought confusion, however student felt comfortable asking for clarification, a topic which student's mother had previously labelled as a point of difficulty, indicating increasing trust.
Student failed to complete last week's homework, lying about it and indicating either a lack of understanding, respect or a fear of getting the wrong answer, of which I believe the latter is correct. Work also may have been too difficult and not thoroughly explained enough, suggesting a different approach needed. Student took a highly visual approach to answering questions, resulting in some incorrect answers, suggesting a need to vary structure of equations whilst teaching them to avoid stagnating in one place.

Managed to gauge level at which student is operating, allowing for the creation of lesson plans for following weeks to target specific areas of weakness. Student managed to redo question after being instructed on how to do so, indicating a desire to learn and the ability to do so with direct guidance.
The student showed difficulty understanding basic numeracy skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of integers. Had difficulty understanding direct instructions, as well as difficulty grasping where to write equal signs and fraction symbols. Need to scale back; move slower, starting with addition and subtraction and allowing her to receive direct guidance whilst asking her to complete tasks independently.
