When being a tutor, I consider the most important thing is not to provide the students with the answer but to guide them through the difficulties of learning. As their predecessor and mentor, I have the responsibility of taking their hands and lead them towards the right path, lighting up the passion of learning in them through my engagement.…

Tutoring is very different to a typical classroom setting. Each class is unique and solely focused on the one student. This one-to-one learning experience is something many students wouldn’t normally get in a classroom. Naturally, they’ll be able to ask as many questions as they want. As a result, you’ll feel you’re making a real…

I think patience is the most important skill a tutor can have. Some students don't understand a concept right away, I had to have a concept explained to me multiple times before and if the tutor was patient I was not scared to ask. I think as I have been tutored before I knew what worked for me and what didn't so I could apply those ideas. This…

Be patient with them and encourage them to do their best. Consistency is key and results don't just appear overnight, trust the process and at the end all anyone can ask of you is to do your best. Another big thing is to always be honest with them, whether that means admitting that you don't know something (but can find out for them) or letting…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is giving them confidence that they can learn. This will give them confidence to try and be creative in finding ways to understand any complex topic they need to know. One of my strengths as a tutor is that I am creative in discussing complex topics. I can discuss the same topic in different…

I believe that a tutor should be extremely cautious in what they say; can everything be supported with a logical statement? Because the steps the tutors take to construct the answer are how the students learn from them, a tutor must prepare well and be confident and knowledgeable of what they are giving to the students. It's not about providing…

Competence in mathematics comes down to practice and I believe that a tutor has to constantly encourage the student to practice and develop this skill. Having faced challenges in Science during my high school, I am aware of the problems students face in understanding complex mathematical concepts. Aside from attempting to push the students academic abilities to new heights, I believe that a tutor can provide valuable insight regarding life as a whole. At this point, we are happy with the way things are progressing. Ryan seems a bright and capable young man and Kirsten does feel the sessions are assisting her.

Inside PadstowTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Pranay focused on spelling difficult words and improving his story writing by revising descriptive introductions, while also practising basic reading and comprehension skills.

Year 6 student Beau worked through multiplying and dividing fractions as well as order of operations, with extra practice using maths mentals exercises to strengthen understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Grace tackled equivalent fractions—learning how to cancel them out—and moved into adding and subtracting decimals, often applying concepts through worked examples in her homework.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 English, not applying written feedback on story drafts meant improvements in structure and clarity were missed—one note read, "I have given him both verbal and written feedback... I would like him to start applying it."

A Year 7 student hesitated to ask questions during class or tutoring, missing chances to clarify misunderstood concepts.

In Year 6 maths, skipping working out led to difficulties tracing errors later ("she is forgetting to show this when answering questions both during the tutoring session and whilst completing homework").

By lesson's end, a Year 7 student often disengaged, leaving harder problems unfinished.

Recent Achievements

One Padstow tutoring session saw a high school student, Noah, take real ownership of his study by breaking down an English assessment with the tutor and independently committing to submit a final essay draft by a set deadline—a big shift from needing step-by-step guidance.

Another win came when Robine, also in high school, started leaving questions blank in her homework if she was unsure, instead of guessing—she now actively asks for help so she can fix mistakes together during sessions.

Meanwhile, younger student Pranay proudly shared that he's begun regularly asking his teacher clarifying questions at school when confused.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Padstow Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Southside Montessori School.
