A good tutor should be able to motivate the student and kindle the interest in the subject. Once the child starts liking the subject, grades, results etc become the norm and the student will be able to learn effortlessly. I have produced excellent results at GCE and IGCSE examinations. I have trained teachers to use whole brain teaching techniques…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is definitely making them feel comfortable learning and learn in a fun and rewarding way. No matter the student, if they do not WANT to learn it is extremely unlikely that they will actually grasp the concept. Therefore, by turning learning into a fun experience the student's learning…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, outside of teaching concepts, is to support the student to arrive at the conclusion/answer themselves rather than leading them to it. A tutor must always support and encourage students to think for themselves. I always listen to my students and encourage them to think out loud. This way I can…

I believe, as a tutor it is our duty to support the students and encourage them through their learning journey. Complimenting a work well done and correcting the mistakes are such examples. Although it may not seem significant it is quite the opposite as it builds the self esteem of a student and gives them confidence to learn the subject. A tutor…

A tutor must not only teach children the subject, but also must prepare them to handle real world situations when it comes to applying what they have learnt in class. We as tutors must give them some practice of those types of situations. I am very friendly with kids, and I want them to be open and always let me know if they understand or not, and…

Evaluating the academic potential and comprehension level of a student is very important for a tutor. Only by understanding the current situation, can a tutor estimate the methods to employ in teaching a student or estimate how far back the tutor has to start with the basics. Also, patience is the key to achieving a student's confidence. Not being…

Inside MambourinTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Aiden focused on applying the chain rule for differentiation and tackled VCAA Exam 1 questions from 2020 to deepen his understanding of composite functions.

For Year 11, Sophie practised finding equations of cubic functions and worked through graphing problems using a CAS calculator to strengthen her algebraic reasoning.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jason reviewed linear equations by solving textbook problems and explored graphical representations on the Cartesian plane, emphasising slope and intercepts in context.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student working on calculus was hesitant to attempt limit and antiderivative revision independently, noting, "I'm a bit rusty and don't really want to teach the wrong thing." This uncertainty led to less engagement with feedback and delayed practice.

In Year 8 mathematics, one learner struggled with messy written work—numbers and equal signs often misaligned—which made checking solutions in linear equations more difficult.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student avoided independent practice for comprehension questions in English, leading to slower progress in reading tasks.

When handwriting remained unclear during spelling activities, self-correction became frustrating rather than productive.

Recent Achievements

One Mambourin tutoring session saw a Year 11 student who previously hesitated with the unit circle suddenly start solving related problems without prompting, especially after figuring out how to antiderive logarithms.

Another high school student began independently checking her work on linear equations and even attempted essay-style questions she'd usually avoid, using textbook examples as reference.

In primary years, a younger learner—who used to guess at words during reading time—read several pages aloud and then completed her spelling tasks with minimal reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Manor Lakes Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Good News Lutheran College - Mambourin Campus.
