Give students sense of power and control over their learning: I think that it is extremely important for a student to feel independent and in control over their learning. In my experience, when a student can take pride in their work they are more likely to succeed in the learning environment. If they are struggling to understand the subject or concepts being taught, it can make them feel out of control or hopeless - leading to poorer outcomes.
